As a college student, I had to become organized in order to succeed in college. I also live in a small apartment, which means that I had to come up with ideas to maximize my space. Know what you have, what you need, and what you don’t need:
We tend to collect and save things in our drawers or boxes with the thought that we are going to give it some use one day. Guess what? That day never comes, because we end up buying the same thing that we saved somewhere in the office.
One day, get everything out of boxes or drawers and organize them into groups. For example, group everything in its own category: pens, color pencils, erasers, markers, paper… e.t.c.
Throw away all the office supplies that are missing pieces or that no longer work. Make a box or a bag with all the office supplies that you want to donate. Keep only what you are really going to use. You don’t need 10 black pens, keep the 5 pens that you really like.
2. Find a place for everything:
I like to use my old candle’s jars to put my pens, markers, and highlighters. I like to group them in a way that is easy for me to remember and easy to see. Big markers with big markers, thin markers with thin markers, highlighters (big or small), sharpies with sharpies, and pens with pens. Remember how I told you to save 5 pens from all the ones you had? Well, I group those pens in another container to use them when the current ones that I have run out of ink. That way I don’t have to search like crazy for a specific pen.
3. Label Everything:
Label your storage drawers to know exactly what is inside of each one of them. The first two drawers of my storage drawer (right side of the picture) have everything related to school supplies. The third drawer has everything related to technology (charging cables, laptop cable, batteries… e.t.c.).
I put a label on each drawer and I always make sure to put whatever I use back on that specific drawer, no matter how lazy or tired I am. The only way to keep your office organized all the time is to take care of the drawers and to put everything back in them.
4. Free Printable:
My brother texts me all the time asking me, “where is the printer paper? where is the stapler? where is the glue? where are the markers? where is…?” All the time! I decided to create a cheat sheet for him. Since my drawers are either color-coded or labeled, I put where everything is on the printable sheet.
The rule in my room: “You can use anything you need, but you must return it to the place you found it.” 😉
